I was born and raised in Lục Yên, a quiet mountainous district in northern Vietnam that holds a sparkling secret beneath its soil: some of the most beautiful and valuable natural gemstones in Southeast Asia.

Growing up here, gems were more than just beautiful stones—they were part of our everyday lives, our family stories, and even our transformation as a community.

Ruby – The Stone That Changed My Hometown

Pigeon blood ruby, with its deep, fiery red, is Lục Yên’s most legendary gemstone. Decades ago, when my grandparents were walking through the forest, they stumbled upon some red-colored rocks. Not knowing what they were, they polished them and wore them as simple jewelry. Only later did they discover they were carrying natural rubies.

These rubies have changed lives in my hometown. Many local families, including my own, were able to build better lives thanks to them. Today, high-quality rubies over 1 carat are extremely rare, and even more valuable.

Sapphire – My Personal Favorite

Sapphires, from the same mineral family as rubies, come in a beautiful range of colors—blue, yellow, pink, and more. Personally, I’m in love with a rare kind of bi-color sapphire we sometimes find here: a mix of deep forest green and fresh lime green. It reminds me of a dewdrop on a jungle leaf in the early morning light—gentle, mysterious, and full of life.

Spinel – Understated but Unique

Another gemstone we locals admire is spinel. Unlike ruby and sapphire, spinel often comes in softer, rarer colors like pink-lavender, brownish-pink, and even orange-red. While it may not be as flashy as ruby, spinel has a quiet elegance that’s hard to resist.

What makes Lục Yên truly special is our rare cobalt spinel. Its vivid blue is unlike any other gem I’ve seen—so electric that no camera can truly capture it. It’s incredibly rare, with tiny deposits that make each stone valuable for collectors and investors alike.

Other Local Gems

Of course, Lục Yên offers more than just ruby, sapphire, and spinel. We also find tourmaline, peridot, and other lesser-known stones. As someone who grew up seeing these gems straight from the earth, I can tell you—every stone here has a story.
